I had scheduled one of our C-54 aircraft for a 0600 departure from Etimesgut AB to Athens, Greece. Captain Witt would pick me up at my apartment on Gazi Mustafa Kemal Blvd at 0445, then pickup a crew chief, and on to the flight line. As I waited on the street, which I notice there was no vehicle movement or any activity at all. The Sun is up at that hour and there is usually a lot of activity. There was a loudspeaker blaring in the background and as I looked to my left at the round-about down the street, I was shocked to see a line of tanks blocking the street. Captain Witt showed up on time, but had no idea what was going on. We picked up our crew chief down the street and we noticed several hundred people standing in a line to get bread at the bread store. We turned off of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Blvd and headed toward the Etimesgut flight line. Within a short distance we were stopped at a roadblock. We were told to put our hands in the air. We identified ourselves as American and after several minutes, a Turkish solder took over the wheel of our jeep. He drove us to a Hospital, which we learned was a neutral zone. By this time it was around 0700. They put us on the second floor from which we could see some of the action going on.
