The relationship between the Army and the environment is a two-way street. On the one hand, soldiers and operations affect the environment; on the other, the environment affects soldiers and operations. If the operation is not planned and managed well, the presence of soldiers in a camp can affect the environment badly. It is true that wars, soldiers and armies affect the environment a lot… The United States army uses almost 21 billion liters of fuel every year. This is more than the carbon emissions of Denmark. So it is actually a big waste. According to Newsweek, in 2017 the US military created more than 25,000 kilotons of carbon dioxide by burning fuels. Looking at these numbers, the damage from the US army is actually alarming. During war, armies need large areas of land and sea. In many cases, these areas are ecologically important areas as well. Especially nuclear and chemical weapons cause a lot of harm to the environment. They are very destructive. Deforestation is also another effect of war. Sometimes the armies knowingly clear the forested land in order to cover larger areas. So what can be done in order to protect environment? Protecting civilians first requires that we protect the environment that they depend on. Armies in the world can focus on training its Soldiers to prepare for operations that will not cause any harm to environment. Nowadays, the US military tries to decrease its carbon footprint and they increase renewable electric generators on the bases. The US army also announced that the soldiers take a class called ‘’Climate 101’’. In the class, the soldiers learn environmental effects of climate change and how to protect the environment.
