Gandhi ji has always been an inspiration to me, and I was a firm believer in bringing about transformative change in a prejudiced society through non-violent means. One incident that comes to mind was the suppression of the lower caste by the upper caste in the Harijan locality. The Dalits of Harijans were frequently subjected to upper caste dominance and fear. The upper castes used to kill 30-40 buffalos during navrati to instil fear in the minds of lower castes in order to maintain their dominance, and if any lower caste revolted, they would meet the same fate as sacrificed buffoloes. Aside from this cruel act, the act of leaving dead buffalo bodies in the harijans' village caused epidemics such as cholera, affecting many villagers and scheduled castes of Dhaura who were forced to eat the meat of those dead buffaloes. All of this posed a mental and physical health risk for these submissives. Following in the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi, I was determined to put an end to the vicious practice through non-violence protest once and for all. I led the Rural Litigation and Entitlement Kendra (RLEK), which persuaded and convinced the villagers of Dhaura village, Lakhamandal to stop slaughtering buffalos during Navratri. After more than three years of struggle, this system was brought to an end.
