Suriname receives help from the Netherlands in tackling flooding. The Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation, Liesje Schreinemacher, announced on Friday that she would make financial support available for this and that she would deploy experts from the Dutch water sector. The contribution of 200,000 euros is intended for food, clean drinking water and education. By deploying water experts, the Netherlands helps Suriname to map out the urgent water problems and possible solutions for them. The money is intended to support the efforts of the UN organization Unicef in Suriname. The flooding currently affects 7,000 Surinamese. Unicef is helping dutch contributions to provide emergency aid to those affected. The organization provides food, clean drinking water, school supplies and medical care. The organization also provides specific supplies for personal hygiene of women and girls. In this way, the Netherlands responds to the requests of the Surinamese government for international assistance. In addition, expertise via the Dutch Risk Reduction Team (DRR–Team) will be deployed on site as soon as possible. A DRR-Team consists of experts from the Dutch water sector and makes recommendations for short- and long-term solutions in response to urgent water problems. A team leader is currently being selected who will travel to Suriname in the short term to map out the exact needs together with the Surinamese authorities. The further deployment of an expert team will be based on this exploration, also in line with initiatives by other donors, such as the World Bank, minister Schreinemacher writes to the House of Representatives. Minister Albert Ramdin of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation had made the request for help with the flooding in Suriname on 2 June. On the request to provide experts for the Afobaka dam that is now under pressure, Minister Schreinemacher says in a letter to parliament that various options for support from the Netherlands have been identified. "In the Netherlands there is limited expertise in the field of dams and for that reason the Surinamese authorities have been advised alternative help channels for this request."
