Qatar has achieved great strides in different fields, transforming from a barren desert into a fast emerging economy. These milestones led to vast improvements in the overall quality of life for both Qataris and foreign residents. Qatar’s National Vision 2030 aims at transforming Qatar into an advanced country by 2030, balancing economic, environmental, and social development while preserving its cultural heritage. This offers win-win opportunities for Qatar to address key issues such as air pollution, waste management, and energy efficiency while promoting innovation and economic diversification. Supporting this vision is the National Environment and Climate Change Strategy, which identifies greenhouse gas emissions and air quality, biodiversity, water, circular economy and waste management, and land use as key priority areas. In addition, Qatar’s revised Nationally Determined Contribution, which articulates Qatar’s commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement, set a 25% emissions reduction by 2030 while emphasizing economic diversification with mitigation and adaptation co-benefits. In January 2022, the Global Green Growth Institute, an intergovernmental organization that promotes green growth as a sustainable economic model, started its operations in Qatar hosted by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. In response to Qatar’s challenges and opportunities, and after a successful scoping phase initiated in 2019, a three-year funding agreement was concluded with the State of Qatar in 2021 to implement green growth and climate resilience projects in Qatar, with the aim to directly support the objectives of the Qatar National Vision, National Environment and Climate Change Strategy, and the revised Nationally Determined Contribution. To foster Qatar’s international cooperation efforts in promoting climate action and sustainability, GGGI also signed an agreement with the Qatar Fund for Development to promote green entrepreneurship and climate-smart agriculture in Small Island Development States and Least Developed Countries.
