Kochi Metro, one of Kerala’s flagship projects, has brought about a revolutionary change in the urban transport sector of Kochi city and it has now completed 5 successful years of commercial operation. During these 5 years, 6 crore people have commuted by Kochi Metro. 2nd Aug 2011 - the SPV - Kochi Metro Rail Limited was formed. 13th September 2012 - The Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri. Manmohan Singh laid the foundation stone for the Kochi Metro Rail project. 7th June 2013 – The construction works commenced. 7Th February 2014 - The agreement was signed between the French funding agency (AFD) and KMRL. 26th May 2014 - The first girder of the project was launched. 20th October 2014 - The Prototype design of the station was unveiled. 21st March 2015 - The first Rolling stock car body was revealed. 3rd September 2015 - The new Logo was publicized. 2nd January 2016- the 1st Set of Rolling stock manufactured under the Make in India Project was handed over by M/s Alstom to KMRL. Some of the noteworthy initiatives of KMRL are: Installation of solar panels on the station roofs and available vacant land enabled KMRL to achieve an energy neutrality of 51 %. KMRL was the 1st PSU to extend employment opportunities to the Transgender community and obtained international recognition. As part of the Women empowerment initiative, KMRL engaged women from Kerala’s celebrated Women’s self-help initiative called `Kudumbashree’ to undertake customer facilitation functions, thus providing employment opportunities to approximately more than 600 women. Implementation of the Rainwater harvesting system across the metro stations with technical support from SCMS Water Institute. KMRL introduced E-autos and E-buses as feeder services to ensure 1st and last-mile connectivity to the metro commuters. As a part of the city beautification initiative, KMRL carried out gardening of the medians along the Metro corridor and also created. 10th January 2016 – the 1St Set of Rolling Stock arrived at the Muttom Metro yard. 23rd January 2016 – The Trial run of the Rolling Stock was carried out on the Muttom test track. 21st March 2016 – The trial on the Viaduct commenced. 5th May 2017 - Statutory Approval was accorded by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety for the commencement of Kochi Metro’s commercial operations. 17th June 2017 - Shri. Narendra Modi, Honorable Prime Minister of India and Shri Pinarayi Vijayan Honorable Chief Minister of Kerala dedicated the first stretch of Kochi Metro from Aluva to Palarivattom to the nation. 3rd October 2017 - Revenue operations commenced from Palarivattom to Maharajas College 3rd September 2019 – The stretch from Maharaja’s College to Thykoodam was opened to the public. 7th September 2020 - Kochi Metro commenced Revenue operations on the final stretch of Phase-1 from Thykoodam to Petta. Construction works were completed on the Phase-I Extension stretch from Petta to SN Junction, which KMRL independently executed, and the CMRS inspection was held on the 9th and 10th of June 2022.
