United Nations military personnel are called ‘’the Blue Helmets.’’ Today, they consist of over 70,000 military personnel and these personnel are taken from national armies from across the globe. UN work alongside police and civilians to promote stability, security, and peace processes. They protect personnel and property, they work with local communities, and security forces promote peace. In many missions, protection of civilians is at the heart of our work. Blue Helmets are protecting people against threats and contributing to a secure environment. The military personnel come from nations large and small, rich and poor. They bring different cultures and experience to the job, but they are united in their determination to keep the peace. What do UN military personnel do? The UN has been taking military personnel for service in peace operations since 1948. UN military personnel can be called upon to: • Protect civilians and UN personnel, • Monitor and observe peace processes, • Provide security during elections, • Assist in-country military personnel with training and support. UN military peacekeepers are often deployed in remote and dangerous environments where they face challenges especially when protecting civilians. The United Nations Office of Military Affairs looks for highly qualified military officers from UN Member States for service in our peace missions around the world. The most common sort of UN peacekeeper is the infantry soldier. These skilled soldiers include engineers. Helicopters and their crews are also needed for the area of influence and being much more visible. Other specialists include transport companies, communicators and medical personnel.
