One such Indian family is the Gupta Brothers of South Africa. The three brothers, Ajay, Atul, and Rajesh Gupta was one of the wealthiest families in South Africa. The Gupta brothers were born in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. They were born into a relatively poor family. But they always wanted to strike gold in life. The Gupta brothers migrated to South Africa in 1993. They started selling shoes in the street of CapeTown. As the world went through a Computer boom from 1994 - 1995, the Gupta brothers saw an opportunity and started selling computer and computer parts under the name Shahara Computers. With the money earned from the computer business, the Gupta brothers started expanding their businesses to new areas. Every time a sector in South Africa was privatized, and the Gupta brothers would enter the sector. In less than two decades, the Gupta brothers built an empire of mining, energy, air travel, and media businesses. In 2016, Gupta Brothers were the 7th richest family in South Africa. The brothers used their money to make political connections. The Gupta brothers were particularly close to the former South African president Jacob Zuma. Zuma and the Guptas were so closed that they earned the name Zupta (Zuma + Gupta). The daughter and wife of Jacob Zuma once worked in businesses owned by the Gupta brothers. During the presidency of Jacob Zuma, the Gupta brothers were involved in numerous corruptions and scams. The brothers were accused of influencing government appointments and misappropriation of public funds. The Gupta brothers even got the finance minister of South Africa sacked by President Zuma. When the scams of president Zuma came to light, he was forced to resign in 2018. The fall of Zuma started the end of the Gupta empire in South Africa. The brothers fled South Africa in 2018 after an official investigation was launched against them. Two brothers, Atul and Rajesh Gupta were arrested by the South African authorities this week in UAE. The third brother Ajay Gupta is still on the run. From Saharanpur to South Africa, one of the most powerful families in the country, to being arrested by the authorities, life has come full circle for the Gupta brothers.
