How Ashwagandha helps us with stress? Stress in our body occurs in 3 phases. The first phase is called as the Alarm phase where the central nervous system in the body is awakened to deal with the stress. The second phase is the resistance phase, where the body resists the stress but remains on high alert for a while. In this phase the body begins to repair itself after the initial shock from the stressful event and normalize heart rate, blood pressure and other body parameters. The third phase is the exhaustion phase, when activation in the first two stages continues over time, causing a breakdown in the balance within our body. The chemicals in Aswagandha, extend the resistance phase in our bodies, allowing it more time to repair and heal from the stress. Ashwaganda also contains alkaloids and other chemicals that help calm the brain, reduce swelling, lower blood pressure, and alter the immune system. So when taken over a period of time, Aswaganda can actually normalise the cortisol levels which is the primary stress hormone and help us with chronic stress.
