Intro: Vegetables? Some like them, and others don’t. Have you ever tasted a vegetable that you didn’t like the first time but then the second or third time, you noticed that it wasn’t so bad looking back on it. Appreciation : I’m Ashley, and that vegetable in my life was public speaking. Even though I hated stepping foot in this class, never knowing if I was the next one going up to talk. I appreciated the challenges because they made me step out of my comfort zone but in a good way. The people in this class also made it special because overall, we were all doing the same thing, making mistakes and getting better at something most of us thought we could never see ourselves doing for a class. Reflection : It didn’t cure my anxiety when speaking to a class or in general but, in some ways, made me more confident in the way I deliver things. As we did our moth stories, it was the first time I felt comfortable and confident talking in public, especially in front of the class. From the first time to now, I know how to make myself more presentable and gather my information to make it more appealing. I also learned so much about the components of a speech that I didn’t know before. How you start and end a story is just as important as the content. I have changed in that I have a better mindset and am more open-minded than when I first talked in front of the class. I learned that everyone makes mistakes, but those mistakes we know to improve for the next time. Remembrance : What I will remember about this experience is that even when you make a mistake, take your time and act like you know what you’re talking about because the audience won’t be able to tell, so just keep going. Another thing would be not staying in a specific spot but rather moving around the room, getting them to get their attention on you. I hope to not be fidgety with anything in my hand but just to let them do their own thing while moving when I’m talking. Although vegetables aren’t my favorite, I guess they aren’t too bad. So the next time you find yourself not liking a vegetable, just try it again. You might end up liking it.
