Dear Dr. Gopinath, As a recent Connecticut College graduate with a major in biochemistry, I am interested in joining the team as a Research Assistant in the Gopinath lab at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. I am passionate about pursuing research, and after working for a few years, I plan to attend graduate school in biomedical sciences and pursue a career in scientific research. The Gopinath lab provides the collaborative and supportive scientific environment I desire to work in where I would be able to utilize my skills and advance the lab’s ongoing projects. With a strong curiosity in immunology and pathogenesis, the lab’s research investigating the role of vaginal microbiome in immune homeostasis and pathogen mechanisms is something I aspire to learn more about. As a Research Assistant, I am excited to contribute to this cutting edge immunology research and interact with world-class scientists at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the surrounding Boston scientific community. I am a strong candidate for the Research Assistant position due to the skills I have obtained through previous work experience, research experiences, and coursework. As someone with a strong background in biochemistry and chemistry, I am interested in learning more about molecular biology and possess a strong enthusiasm and quick ability to learn new methods. My current position as a Clinical Trial Med Tech at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute has taught me new techniques and lab organization skills that I can bring to the Research Assistant position. Furthermore, I have also participated in scientific research including an internship at an inorganic chemistry lab at Trinity College Dublin studying the reactivity of an enzyme modeled compound, a semester studying the green fluorescent protein (GFP), using online software to research unanswered questions about GFP’s structure, and a semester performing literature reviews on the effects of COVID-19 on taste and smell. Through these experiences, I have found the rewards of participating in a long term research project and gained skills in scientific techniques as well as problem solving and protocol development. In these experiences, I also analyzed and presented data and participated in lab meetings. In addition to my scientific experiences, my leadership roles outside the lab have also taught me communication, collaboration, and organizational skills. These skills and experiences would allow me to make contributions that further the goals and research projects of the Gopinath lab and become an organized valuable lab member and team player. I look forward to engaging with the molecular biology approaches used in the Gopinath lab. Thank you for taking the time to review my application. The Research Assistant position would provide an invaluable experience and the next step to my career goals of working in biomedical research where I could apply my abilities and scientific interests. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Sincerely, Sarah Lawler
