The catechism of the Catholic Church angels as purely spiritual creatures having intelligence. They are immortal creatures surpassing imperfection all visible creatures. Quoting Saint Augustine, the word angel is the name of the office not their nature. For their nature is spirit and in their office as angels they have the responsibility to serve as servants and messengers of God. This week we will be celebrating two feast days associated with angels. The first September 29th, the feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. Archangel Raphael Archangel Raphael whose name means “God has healed”. Is first mentioned in the book of Tobit. Tobit 12:15. “Who am I? I am the angel Raphael, and my place is among those seven who stand in the presence of the Lord.” Although he is not mentioned by name in any other text the term “Angel of the Lord” is attributed to him as in John 5:4, because of the healing associated with him. Archangel is the patron of travellers Archangel Gabriel Gabriel means “man of God”. Gabriel first appears in the book of Daniel where he announce to Daniel the prophecies of the seventy weeks Daniel 9 :21 And I was still at my prayer, when the human figure of Gabriel, as I had seen it at the beginning of my vision, flew swiftly to my side; it was the hour of the evening sacrifice when he reached me. Archangel Gabriel is probably best known as the Angel, who appeared to Zachariah, announcing the birth of St John on the Baptist. Luke 1:19 The angel answered, My name is Gabriel, and my place is in God’s presence; I have been sent to speak with thee, and to bring thee this good news. And most importantly Archangel Gabriel is the one who announced to the Blessed Virgin Mary, that she would bear a son who she shall call Jesus. Luke 1:26 26 When the sixth month came, God sent the angel Gabriel to a city of Galilee called Nazareth Archangel Gabriel is the patron of Communications workers. Archangel Michael Michael which means “Who is like to God?” is one of the chief angels. In Daniel Archangel Gabriel refers to him as one of the High Lords Daniel 10:13 but these twenty-one days he who guards the realm of Persia has delayed my coming. At last Michael, one of the high lords, brought me aid, and there, at Persia’s court, I was left master of the field. Saint Michael is also the leader of heaven’s forces in their battles against satan. Revelations 12:7 Fierce war broke out in heaven, where Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought on their part, Michael the Archangel is the patron saint of grocers, mariners, paratroopers, police officers, and military personnel.
