TOOLBOX TALK – May 2022 Burst Discs Failure There have been a number of Burst Disc failures recently. When a Burst Disc fails I would ask the team to find out what went wrong and complete an improvement notice and send directly to management as soon as possible. There were 3 incidents investigated in the last 3 months. They have been different machines and different teams but all have same initial problem. The teams failed to turn the engine down by moving the A.T.C, Hand throttle or when selecting button one on the electronic engines before starting. How to prevent initial over pressure No.1 Rule prior to starting engines… • Always start low • Undo the A.T.C and turn it down • Turn the Calder hand valve anti-clockwise • Turn the hand throttle on EX08 in whilst holding the button IN at the end of every shift • Press the button number you are using again on the electronic panel when you finish and only then stop the engine (with the engine stop NOT the emergency stop) Finally, EX07 cannot run the 1.35mm nozzles or the 4-jet head as the engine no longer has the power - always use a 1.45mm nozzle with EX07.
