Do you remember how O.W. makes fun of the Americans in The Canterville Ghost? Oscar Wilde makes fun of the Americans saying that they have a lot of money but no history or culture. In fact, in the beginning of “The Canterville Ghost” Mr Otis says that he doesn’t mind if the house is haunted because he’s American and Americans can buy everything, also a ghost. What nationality was O.W? When was he born? Why did he go to the USA? Oscar Wilde was Irish and he was born in Dublin in 1854. He went to the USA for a long tour of many important American cities where he gave lectures. He talked to audiences about his writing and his ideas about art. He became very popular, a lot of people wanted to see him because he wore unusual clothes and had unusual ideas. But many Americans thought his clothes were silly and his ideas were dangerous. I know that you’ve read The Picture of Dorian Gray in English in its original version. Did you have any problems with comprehension? Do you like reading in English? Yes, I had some problems with comprehension, but I was able to understand the overall meaning of the book. I like reading in English. I’ve read six other books in English: The fault in our stars, My brilliant friend, Those who live and those who stay, The story of a new name, Harry Potter and the philosopher's stone and Little women. This summer I’m going to read all Jane Austen’s books. What do you think is the best way to learn English? The best way to learn English is to go abroad because you’ll be totally immersed in the language. Another way is to listen to podcasts, songs, audiobooks or watch videos, films and TV series in English. Moreover, it’s important to read anything: books, newspapers, magazines, web sites, emails, food labels… You can also set your mobile in English.
