National Association Jamaica is a non-profit making charitable organization, was found around July 1946 by a small group of nurses whose vision was to provide support, advice and guidance to the new recruits coming to the UK from Jamaica, who recognized the urgent need for improving standard of nursing education and service in Jamaica. The association operated from a suitcase which was kept in the position of one of the officers. The association aimed to obtain a state recognition of nursing as a profession and to advance the status of nursing. A current location for the NAJ is in a Building at 4 Trevennion Park Road, Kingston 5, Jamaica. The aim of the Nurses Association of Jamaica seeks to develop a vibrant and supportive organization, promoting nurses’ special contribution to the Jamaican population and the respect for quality of life. The main objectives that they wanted to achieve was (the three R’s) REGISTRATION, RECIPROCITY and RECOGNITION. The Nurses Association vision is to lead and transform the Caribbean in new nursing innovations and provide competitive, cutting edge nursing services globally. Some of the many different types of nurses in the nurses field : Registered Nurse (RN),Cardiac Nurse, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) ,Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) ,Critical Care Nurse ,ER Nurse ,Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) ,Geriatric Nursing. The Organization is run by nurses from diverse background who share learning experience andKnowledge, explore nursing issues and exchange information of clinical and general interest, soevery member of the association is important and valuable and play a very important role in the Field. Few highlight over years below:- In October 1972, the NAJ released its first position paper, "Blue Print for Progress." In Denmark, NAJ's President attended a seminar on effective nursing care. For the first time, National Nurses Week was observed in 1973. In May. JEANA (Jamaica Enrolled Assistant Nurses Association) offers NAJ Associate Membership The NAJ's negotiating body holds its first meeting in August 1973. 1974 – The National Association of Journalists (NAJ) was established as the official bargaining agent. In the country, there is a representative body for nursing issues. First Nurse of the Year Award, 1975: ( Mrs Sara is the recipient. Mullings-Hamilton, a Mandeville public health nurse Award from the Norman Washington Manley Foundation for Miss Gertrude Swaby.is the NAJ's Recipient of Excellence. Foundation NAJ Credit Union members took part in the event. Study Club training sessions as a foundation for establishing Credit union NAJ Co-op. Representatives of NAJ toGovernment 1993 – NAJ’s Secretariat moved to the ground floor of the new office block at 4 Trevennion Park Road. 1994 – Participated in CNO in Bermuda 1995 – Participated in ICN/CNR in Zimbabwe, Africa 1996 – NAJ celebrated its 5oth Anniversary.
