Dear Mr Cliffe Homework is damaging to children's brains and it can cause more harm than good. “I am extremely overwhelmed by assignment, assessment, homework and work in general. I have begun to spiral into a pit of sadness and depression and I can't get out”. This is someone's story, Jackson, and he has spoken to beyondblue.org about his difficulties with school and there are so many more waiting to be heard. This is a serious issue and needs to be addressed more often. Homework is really time-consuming as people don’t go home and sit there in front of a tv but they have other commitments. To add, it can cause more harm than you can suspect, it can cause mental disorders and be harmful to many students. I will be talking about the many negative effects of homework and why homework should not be allocated to senior school students. Homework is very time consuming since many people in the senior school have jobs, play sports and have commitments they attend to. After all of that, it doesn’t leave enough time to do homework for all of the subjects from earlier in the day. In research by academic gates, over half of the school students don’t complete their homework because of how much it is and how little time they have each night. nd even if you have time to do some homework, how are you supposed to choose which one to do because when you come back the next day the homework you didn’t complete, the teachers will argue with you and tell you off for not completing it and when you say I didn’t have time, their instant response will be that “you had time for your other subject, why not mine”? Now, from experience, this has happened too many times and it is exhausting trying to fight back to support your side of the story and we end up getting in more trouble. If you think about it, we have 24 hours in a day, we sleep for an average of 8 hours, go to school for at least 6, eat for about 30 minutes and get ready for school for about 1 ½ hours. Two hours for sports and if you have a job that your day gone. So it adds up and there is no time for homework and that is adaptable for every person because they may have other commitments throughout the week. So time adds up and that is only one reason students shouldn’t have homework since there are hundreds more to think about. One of the huge reasons why homework should not be allocated to senior students is because people suffer dramatically from mental disorders and depression from the stress of homework and because they are stuck inside, staring at a piece of paper or a device screen. There is so much research by “good therapy”, “bu.edu” and a variety more, telling us that homework is damaging to children and it does so much more harm than good. Going back to what I said earlier about Jackson, it really is a worldwide issue and if you go on any of the therapy websites, including beyond blue, you can see that it’s not only a few people but so many lives being affected by homework. In the past 12 months, a survey was conducted by education matters and they found that mental disorders have affected one in 7 students. That's one in 7 students that struggle on a daily basis with homework which lead to a mental disorder. This statistic is very frightening but very real. If you had 500 students in senior school, that is over 70 students that can’t keep up with the curriculum and are suffering because of it. This is a great deal and the more and more we wait the more people suffer and don’t know it yet but we can change that by scraping homework for the better. Now, you might be thinking that every student just wants to get out of homework and that's why their all against homework but More than seven in 10 schoolchildren have negative feelings toward homework while the majority of parents believe students should be given a break from homework once in a while, a survey showed. The survey was conducted by the Happy Teens Club of Hong Kong Christian Services from August to October last year. Of the more than 700 respondents, 40 per cent were students while the rest were parents. About 60 per cent of the parents said students should have no homework at least one day every week while the rest of the parents said they should not be given homework at least one day of each month. So as you can see it’s parents too that think homework isn’t right. Another research by time.com has shown that homework 20 years ago was effective because it may be an hour or two each week but since it has increased to one to two hours a night it’s not as effective anymore. So it is so many more people than just students and we should be addressing everyone in this situation because everyone has an opinion about homework and the amount it affects and harms people. As you can see, there is so much responsibility around the harm and effects of homework and it needs to be brought to more attention. Homework is harming heaps of students worldwide and by banning homework, it would bring a lot more positive attitudes to everyday lives, it would be less stressful within families and there would be more time to get out and do what you love. Trying to ban homework by yourself is hard but when you go into research there are so many people on board to try to stop it for the better. These are 3 of many reasons why homework should not be allocated to senior school students and I hope you can make the change for the better.
