Henry Gerber founded the Society for Human Rights (SHR) in 1924; it is the first known gay organization that also produced the country’s first gay rights newsletter called Friendship and Freedom. SHR was short-lived as the members of the organization were arrested and the police raided Gerber’s home and confiscated his papers. Gerber later relocated to New York City and continued writing activist works again. However, this time under the pen name Parisex. He continued his activism until his death in 1972.
