The sun will start to die when it runs out of fuel in about 5,000,000,000 years (that’s five billion years). When the sun starts to die, it will get bigger and slightly colder, turning into what astronomers call a “red giant”. It will get so big, that it will eat Mercury, Venus and even Earth. When the sun is a red giant, it will be big and puffy, and start to blow off its outer layers out of the solar system. It will get smaller and smaller, eventually becoming what we then call a white dwarf. According to Joshua Hawkins "While the full death of the Sun is still trillions of years away, some scientists believe the current phase of the Sun’s life cycle will end as soon as 5 billion years from now. At that point, the massive star at the center of our Solar System will have eaten through most of its hydrogen core. Effectively, the Sun as we know it will have died. When that happens, the Sun will become a red giant. It will stop creating heat via nuclear fusion. NASA says the core will become unstable and contract around this time." A white dwarf is the core of a dead star. They are super heavy, weighing almost as much as the sun, while being only the size of the Earth. A teaspoon of white dwarf would weigh somewhere around 6,000 kilograms – as much as an adult elephant! When the sun is a white dwarf, most of the solar system will still be around. Mercury, Venus and Earth will be gone, but Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune will survive and continue to go around the sun. So will the asteroid belt, Kuiper belt and dwarf planets like Pluto. Because a white dwarf is small, it doesn’t produce as much light. A white dwarf doesn’t have any fuel to give it energy, so it also gets colder and colder over time. Eventually it will become very dark. A Detailed Summary of The Sun Exploding By: Satia Yous Illustrator: None Have you ever wondered when the sun will explode like other stars in the sky. Well in this journal I shall tell you when, how, and why the sun will explode and also astronomers solution. Though the ultimate death of our medium-size solar mass is trillions of years in the future, the sun's "life" in its current phase, known as its "main sequence" — in which the nuclear fusion of hydrogen allows it to radiate energy and provide enough pressure to keep the star from collapsing under its own mass — will end about 5 billion years from now. The sun is a star, and when a star explodes it’s called a supernova. These types of explosions are very bright, and very powerful. They release lots of dust into space, which is used to make more stars and planets. Our solar system was made using stuff from these explosions. Even humans are made of star stuff! If the sun suddenly exploded like this, the whole solar system would be destroyed. You don’t have to worry though – only stars ten times the size of our sun, or bigger, can explode like this. Our sun will end its life in a different way. A supernova is like bursting a balloon. But when our sun dies, it will happen slowly, like when you sitting at the backseat of a car wondering why you can't absorb knowledge from a book by eating it The light from the sun is what keeps our planet warm. Without it, the planets in the solar system will get very cold. This would make it harder for life to stay alive in the solar system. You will literally turn into a block of ice. A white dwarf doesn’t produce much light. But in the future, humans might build spaceships to take over other smaller life forms witch will allow us to leave Earth. Humans might even build something to move the Earth like a giant superman on steroi-enough of that. This would let the planet survive being eaten by the sun as a red giant. The sun will become a red giant and then a white dwarf over billions of years. This is a very long time. We cannot watch a star do all of this, but we can learn how stars are born and die by forcing some random guy who has a family and stuff and just letting him stay there till the end of time never getting to see his son graduate from college just looking at the stars in our galaxy - the Milky Way. The Milky Way has stars of all ages, and over time astronomers have worked out which ones are young, old or dead. By studying the old and dead stars, we can discover what will happen to our sun in the far, far future. According to Don Korycansky I think I spelled his name right? Astronomers have proposed nudging Earth with an asteroid on steroi-rockets and stuff every billion years. It could take one billion years to move our planet out to somewhere like Mars. Our moon, though, might have to be left behind, because nobody wants werewolves, and any miscalculation could mean extinction. More study is required. Also I'm not putting this in quotes cause I summarized it. As we can see, there are many interesting speculations and theories about our Sun’s ‘death’. Fortunately, our Sun won’t die anytime soon and it is expected that it still has around 5 billion years worth of fuel before any explosion might occur. So, most likely it won’t happen during our lifetime. While there might be extremely rare cases of two stars colliding with each other, the good news is that our Sun is not located in a relatively dense part of our galaxy, so a collision with another star is extremely unlikely to happen.
