LESSON 3 Organs of Articulation.Classification of Sounds The articulation of sounds implicates: 1. the lips 2. the jaws (inferior –the mandible -, and superior) 3. the hard palate 4. the soft palate /the velum 5. the tongue 6. the uvula We distinguish between two kinds of sounds: vowels and consonants. Vowels are sounds during the production of which there is no obstruction to the flow of air. They are continual, so they can be produced without the help of other sounds. Consonants include any sound that does not fit the definition of the vowel: there is obstruction to the flow of air in some point of the vocal tract, and they cannot be produced without the help of other sounds. All this will be detailed in the paragraphs that will provide a description of sounds.
