In the novel, Life of Pi, by Yann Martel the theme of survival is of central importance even in seemingly impossible and adverse conditions. For the protagonist Pi, the challenge of surviving is driven by the establishment of boundaries on several levels. Firstly this idea is explored at the Pondicherry zoo where Pi grew up. The zoo was an enclosed space where animals were kept in pits, cages and corrals. Here the territorial nature of animals is seen when these animals take possession of the zoo space by spraying it with urine and defending it tooth and nail. Furthermore the importance on boundaries is encouraged by Pi’s Father. One morning he calls the boys Pi and Ravi over to him and wants tot each them a lesson when he took them to see Mahisha a male tiger and put a goat in the tiger’s cage. Here the boys witnessed the gruesome carnage which was the result of traversing boundaries. Later in the Novel when stranded in the life boat Pi uses the he had gained at the zoo about the behaviour of animals to protect and ensure his survival by distinguishing his living space from that of Richard Parker The second aspect is the establishment of mental boundaries. Pi grewup in the confined and protected environment of his loving family. He describes his childhood as that of a prince. But when the Tsimtsum sinks and he Is stranded at sea alone. He uses storytelling and other activities to keep his mind occupied so that he is not overwhelmed by the grief of loosing his family When in the boat Pi also uses a cloth soaked in sea water to suffocate himself and drift into a hallucinatory state where he has extra ordinary dreams and visions. Pi creates this boundary from the real world to keep out the reality of his painful situation. Lastly we see the creation of boundaries when Pi invents Richard Parker. In the life boat Pi had to fend for food by fishing and doing other gruesome things. But As we know Pi as a Hindu there were rules that he had to follow like living a vegetarian diet and not killing animals. So for him to survive Pi creates Richard Parker his animalistic side , the one that was going to handle all the killings and all the gruesomeness while he Pi will remain with his innocence. This is another boundary that was created In coclusion , For Pi to survive his ordeal and for him to maintain his innocence he had to set and adhere to boundaries.
