Hello, my name is Alex and I am your host of How Bizarre podcast and this is Episode 3 of the series, hopefully you`ll like it and it will take some traction in the time to come. So, what is this podcast about? It`s about storytelling and especially about stories that are obscure, unknown to the wider public, strange and sometimes inexplicable, content that somehow never got the attention it deserved, stories that are forgotten in the mists of time regardless if they happened yesterday or some centuries ago. So if you are attracted to bizarre, shocking or just plainly weird stuff, I think you`ll find this podcast very informative and perhaps even entertaining! This podcast is for mature audience and listener discretion is advised. All that being said, now let us dive into the third episode of How Bizarre podcast! Today we begin with this episode named The Butterfly, with a quote by one Joseph Glenville, forgotten English medieval author : “Here lies the will that does not die. Who knows the secrets of the will and its power? What we call God is nothing but the great Will that arranges all things according to the nature of its purpose. Man does not surrender to the angels, not even to death completely, except through the weakness of his fragile will.” Today`s story takes place in French Guiana, Some would say a colony Though official naming being Overseas department of France In the Northeast of South American continent, A place famous for being a spot From where satellites are being launched And to lesser extent, for its dark past. What breaks us up, in everyday life? All those ordinary things All that banality and monotony make us whine every now and then ... But in some distant place, at some distant time and for some distant people Everyday survival was hampered by Malaria vectored in by giant mosquitoes, something called Sodomy, Cholera, Solitary confinement, Sharks, Guillotine and death. And hope. To escape. To be free. For one man, prisoner number 5-4-3-4-5, the alleged killer of a Marseille pimp, a former soldier and forger, all the things named above have been commonplace for 15 years. His name was Charriere. Henri Charriere. Known commonly as the Butterfly. The one for whom no one on the planet would switch places. And who I respect as a prime example for the hope and will Working together, to set him free And the will that Joseph Glenville tells us about, the one that does not die even when you watch your best years go through the sewer pipes in the solitary confinement in Cayenne. No ... not that he is left without all his teeth ... almost without hair ... that malaria is taking its toll ... that he has been caught six times in an attempt to escape ... that he is talking to himself for 5 years in isolation cell, all alone, with his mind, cockroaches and rats ... Even that is not enough to break Henry the “Butterfly” who already spent 15 long years in Guiana and as an old prisoner has a rare privilege because they leave him to die on Devil's Island, the last station for people converted into numbers. Well, he`s old...in a way ... he is 38, although when he looks in the mirror he recognizes an old man who in Marseilles would be easily given 75. One thing the authorities did not consider was spectacular will of Henri Charriere. There is obviously a spark in his brain that makes him forget the dead comrades he dug shallow graves for in Cayenne's swamp, those who disappeared without a trace while trying to escape, and even those who went crazy in solitary confinement after a year or two, However, Henry does not go alone. There are a few who are willing to take risks. Rene, Louis, Pascal ... who still dream of freedom. That day is coming. Everything is going according to plan. The escape succeeds. Seventh attempt in a row. Will this be the final one? The end of agony? Maybe ... somehow they end up in a village where the French colonial government inhabits the lepers of the colony. Who knows, lepers may help. And here comes the test. The test that freezes the blood and scrambles the mind. A nice gentleman who looks like an authority in the village, even though he has only two fingers left on his hand holding the cigar, suddenly offers Henry the cigar he smokes among the leprous remains that were once probably tongue and lip. Not accepting the unwritten codes in Guyana's hell means death. Quick death. Because of that or otherwise, Henry casually takes the cigar and deeply withdraws the smoke. No worries. No fear. This triumph of humanity fills the lepers eyes that can barely see, with tears. There are some. Which are not disgusted by lepers. And who gladly share a cheap tobacco cigar, With a man who is falling apart. Villagers gave them a boat and the friends sailed away ... But not for long ... their fate is cruel one And somehow our 4 escapees are captured Here is the seventh time. Back in isolation. This surely must be the end. Henri Charriere and his friends are counting the last days on That Island ... Even for the most stubborn, the curtain falls once and for all. Oh no no no no. Henry is already looking at the sea. Again. Yes, there is no end, there is no beginning ... the horizon unfolds all the torments and darkness that have plagued him for 15 years. Anyone want to know what freedom is? That is Buttefly`s domain. If anyone knows what freedom is he`s the one. The “butterfly”. Number 5-4-3-4-5. Who packs a raft of coconut shells. One jump. Oblivion or freedom. Unspecified day in 1946. Someone wakes Senora Rita Charriere off the coast of Venezuela every morning. He has such a habit. It gets up at dawn. Always. That's Henry. The true story of the “Butterfly”. Happy ending? Oh Yes. Rita, three children, life in freedom ... even the book that contributed to the hell of the Penal Colony being outlived by Henry himself. Written by him.
