There are different types of negative effects that water pollution has on the environment and biodiversity. Every year, more than 1 billion people globally are affected by unsafe water and become sick, or worse. This includes all people, but especially rural and low-income communities. Human life is a huge negative impact that this issue has, with over 1.5 million deaths per year due to polluted or contaminated water. Other impacts also happen on the environment other than humans. Polluted water in water-dependent regions can cause an abundance of oxygen, known as eutrophication, and kills plants and animals. Chemical waters can also kill or infect the species that live in the water themselves. Polluted water is why big fish like tuna have high amounts of toxins. Throwing away nondegradable into sinks or toilets can cause them to wind up on beaches or other waterways, damaging the ecosystem. Non-water liquids can enter the water system and contaminate it. By stopping these practices, the waterways will be considerably less polluted, and a noticeable change will be seen in the ecosystem. My proposed solution is worth the time, cost, and effort because, in the end, polluted water will harm us, humans, too. Even if you don’t care about the maritime aquatic animals or the plants and animals that depend on the oxygen levels of the water, you must care for your own species. As I said before, hundreds of millions of humans are impacted by polluted water every year, and the more unfortunate ones are even killed. However, if we can collectively stop doing little things like throwing away non-water liquids down the drain, together we can make a difference between a person’s life and death, and the ecosystem in which we thrive.
