The Vikings The Vikings were people who lived long ago in Sweden, Norway and Denmark. They were strong and tall, with fair hair and blue eyes. Most Vikings lived on farms, in houses made of wood, stone or blocks of turf. The men were craftsmen or traders, the women did the household jobs. The children did not go to school, they helped at home and learned from stories. Vikings wore clothes made of cloth, leather and fur. Viking women wore long dresses, the men wore shirts and trousers, and everybody wore jewellery. The Vikings were great sailors and they travelled all over Europe in long ships. They sailed to Britain over 1200 years ago to steal silver, gold and land. They were great warriors. They used spears and shields in battle. They went to England because they were looking for treasures and wealth, in 865. They captured most of the north of England. They destroyed monasteries and killed many monks to get their gold. In November 866, Vikings attacked York and they called the city Jorvik. Many Vikings went to Jorvik and lived there with their families. Archaeologists found lots of clues about the Vikings' life, under a street, in the centre of York. They found out that the Vikings liked music and played board games and dice games. They ate meat, lots of fish, fruit and vegetables. They made bread and drank beer too. They ate on wooden plates and drank from horns. Britain wasn't the only country that the Vikings visited. Some Vikings went east, through Europe, to Asia, or south to Africa. Others sailed west to Iceland, Greenland and North America.
