Coal now contributes 57% of the Philippines’ power. In Zamboanga, specifically Malangas or Malangas Coal Reservation for Subbituminous Coal, is a Coal Reservation exploited by the Philippine National Oil Company - Exploration Corporation. The whole plant includes its main office, clinic, parking for employees and deliveries, worker residence, and the main coal power production site of integrated gasification combined cycle or IGCC with energy towers. An integrated gasification combined cycle or IGCC is a technology using a high-pressure gasifier to turn coal and other carbon-based fuels into pressurized gas—synthesis gas or syn-gas. It can then remove impurities from the syn-gas prior to the electricity generation cycle. IGCC is a power generation technology in which subbituminous coal is partially oxidized with oxygen and steam in a gasifier with sulfur removal unit, HRSG and ASU to produce power using gas and steam turbine generators. Coal is pressurized in a gasifier to form syngas. The syngas is purified for dust and sulfur removal to remove slag and impurities and then sent to a Gas Turbine-Generator for power production. The excess steam for the whole process will be recycled by the air separation unit. On the other hand, the remaining steam will then be heated in the heat recovery steam generator before being fed on the Steam Turbine-Generator. The power generated will then be sent on the high voltage and lower voltage transformers that generates from 69 to 138 thousand volts. The power generated will be distributed to other electrical towers that provides energy for the community.
