Matthew Amanatidis Ryan Fahlikman. HUMAN IMPACT AND ALTERNATIVE ENERGY. HUMAN IMPACT . Cause Of Invasive Species. They are primarily caused by human activities. It happens when someone or the animal in question itself is put into an environment where it isnt welcome. They are primarily spread by human activities, often unintentionally. People, and the goods we use, travel around the world very quickly, and they often carry uninvited species with them. Effect of invasive species. Invasive species are capable of causing extinctions of native plants of animals. Reducing biodiversity. Competing with native organisms for limited resources and altering habitats. They outcompete native species for resources like food and water. They often lack natural enemies (predators, competitors, and parasites) in their new habitat. They grow and reproduce rapidly. Possible solutions towards invasive species. You are allowed to hunt these species without a limit to get rid of them. For example, green iguanas are invasive to florida and its legal to kill iguanas. Green iguanas are not protected in Florida except by anti-cruelty law and can be humanely killed on private property with landowner permission. This species can be captured and humanely killed year-round and without a permit or hunting license on 25 public lands in south Florida. NUCLEAR ENERGY. Pros to nuclear energy. One of the most low carbon energy source. Low Cost- Once they are up and running, electricity generated by nuclear plant reactors is far less expensive than coal, gas, or any other fossil fuel plant for that matter. Essential to our response to climate change and green house gas emissions. Produces Low- Pollution In comparison to coal, gas, and other electric-generating plants, nuclear offers the lowest by far in greenhouse gas emissions. Sufficient Fuel Availability Such as are fossil fuels, the uranium used to supply nuclear power plants is in limited supply. Cons to nuclear energy. Impact on the Environment- In addition to the waste that they produce, nuclear power plants create other impacts to the environment. For example, the mining and enrichment of uranium are not environmentally friendly processes. Limited Fuel Supply- Nuclear energy is not a renewable energy source. Uranium is in limited (although as aforementioned, currently abundant) supply. Even though it’s not a fossil fuel. Risk of Accident- Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, and Fukushima Daiichi are disasters that nobody wants to experience ever again under any circumstances. Expensive to Build-Despite being relatively inexpensive to operate, nuclear power plants are incredibly expensive to build. Nuclear Power Plant Cost to Build. In a 2020 report, Capital Cost and Performance Characteristic Estimates for Utility Scale Electric Power Generating Technologies, gave an estimate for a new US nuclear plant of $6041/kWe. Amount of the land needed A nuclear facility in the United States needs a little more than 1 square mile to operate.
