“The Crucible” by American playwright Arthur Miller in 1953 is a dramatized story of Salem witch trials that took place in Massachusetts Bay Colony during 1692–1693. Abigail, the main character in the play, manipulates the Puritan town's anti-witch fervor to destroy John Proctor, her former employer who once had an affair with her. Power and justice are visible in The Crucible by some of the characters igniting fear in the townspeople. The Godfather is a mob drama movie based on Mario Puzo’s novel of the same name, focuses on the powerful Italian American crime family of Don Vito Corleone. The Godfather's power stems from his willingness to flout legitimate society's moral conventions to get what he wants. The quote spoken by Elizabeth “He have his goodness now” in The Crucible shows how John Proctor gained his personal power through redemption and maintaining his integrity and honor. Proctor refuses to dishonor himself even at the cost of his own life which proves he is ultimately a good man. The price of this goodness is death which is what Proctor is willing to risk. The quote “She found a boyfriend. Not an Italian. She went to the movies with him. She stayed out late. I didn’t protest. Two months ago, he took her for a drive with another boyfriend. They made her drink whiskey. And then they tried to take advantage of her. She resisted. She kept her honour. So, they beat her like an animal. Then I said to my wife for justice we must go to Don Corleone.” spoken by Bonasera who requests that Don Corleone render “justice” on two American boys who beat his daughter and got off with only a suspended sentence. Bonasera’s words implicitly link the boys’ crime with the failure of the legitimate American justice system. The quote spoken by Mary Warren to John and Elizabeth Proctor says “I never knew it before. I never knew anything before…and all at once I remembered everything, she done to me!” which shows how strong the power of persuasion is which easily convinced Mary that she was bewitched by Sarah Good. Another quote spoken by Cheever to Proctor “I think it be evidence, John. I am an official of the court, I cannot keep it” helps to show that Cheever, given authority by the court, has more loyalty to the power than his friend/ neighbour. The quote “Luca Brasi did not fear the police, he did not fear society, he did not fear God, he did not fear hell, he did not fear or love his fellow man. But he had elected, he had chosen, to fear and love Don Corleone.” indicates that Puzo is commenting on the nature of power within the Mafia. In the criminal underworld, those who wield organizational power control those who wield individual power. At Connie’s wedding, Michael tells Kay about Luca Brasi, a violent man who murders without question and possesses no empathy or compassion for others. Another quote “I’ll make him an offer he can’t refuse.” explains how Don Corleone wields his power and how he is able to fulfill promises that others deem impossible to keep. When Don Corleone says he will make “an offer he can’t refuse,” he implies that the offer is not an offer at all; rather, the “offer” is a veiled threat that promises violence and harm to those who refuse the “offer.” The Crucible and The Godfather both give insight into human experiences and behaviours to display how the characters gain or lose power and justice. Characters in The Crucible gained power due to one of the main characters igniting fear in the other characters through their inconsistencies in human behaviour which started to arise wrong accusations. The Godfather represents power and justice through the characters being in the mafia and how their power stems from his willingness to flout legitimate society's moral conventions to get what he wants.
