The development of modern kpop began in the 1990s, which was first influenced by mostly American popular styles; hip hop, rock, jazz, and electronic dance. Kpop is influenced by styles/genres from around the world: such as experimental, rock, jazz, gospel, hip hop, R&B, reggae, electronic dance, folk, country, and classical on top of its traditional Korean music roots. the years of kpop have been divided in 4 different generations. 1st generation (1990s - 2002). Seo Taiji & Boys started a new revolution when they release their debut album “Nan Arayo", allowing other groups in becoming more ‘flexible’ and ‘experimental’ with their music, their footsteps were followed by many successful hiphop and R&B artist like; Yoo Seung-jun, Jinusean, Solid, Deux, 1TYM and Drunken Tiger. The “Big3” entertainment companies; SM, YG, & JYP, were and still are a huge part of Kpop. Other huge groups/solos who also made an impact; H. O. T, Sechs Kies, S. E. S. Fin, K. L., g.o.d., Rain, BoA, & Lee Hyori. 2nd generation (2003 - 2011). The success of boy band TVXQ after its debut in 2003 marked the resurgence of idol groups to Korean entertainment and the growth of K-pop as part of Hallyu (Korean Wave). During this time period, the Hallyu expanded not only in Korea, but as well as in Asia and other parts of the world. Many artists became extremely popular; BoA became the first K-pop singer to reach No. 1 on the Japanese Oricon music chart, Rain sold out a concert in Beijing with 40,000 fans, Baby’s Vox’s single “Coincidence” became very popular in Asian countries and as well becoming the first k-idol group to have a huge fanbase in China, TVXQ marked the rise of boy bands in Japan and becoming the second k-artist, following BoA, in topping the Oricon charts. Girl’s Generation, also previously known as the ‘nation’s girl-group’, BigBang, Wonder Girls, SHINee, Epik High, Super Junior, 2ne1, KARA, 4minute, Brown Eyed Girls, and as well as others have set trends and are looked up by the 3rd and 4th generation, some are still together to this day. They’re well respected in Korea since they were the ones to first to start the Hallyu. 3rd generation (2012 - 2017/18). Many say that we’re still in the 3rd generation, however in my opinion, the 3rd generation ended around 2017 or 2018. Psy “Gangnam Style” blow up all around the world, become the first ever video on Youtube to reach 1 billion views. During this era, everything was way more diverse, from the groups to the music styling, there were some groups with different races such as Chinese, Japanese, and Thai. The choreography began to become more creative and unique compared to the first generation. Groups like; EXO, TWICE, BTS, GOT7, Red Velvet, Monsta X, Seventeen, BLACKPINK, NCT, etc., all have made history, breaking many records that were held by 1st and 2nd generation groups, as well as western artist. These groups still dominate the 4th generation, as many haven’t hit 10 years of being together. TWICE and BTS hold the “nation’s girl/boy group” title. BTS are known as the ones who “paved the way” for other groups in the western market, as they’ve broken many records that were held by legends like the Beatles, Justin Bieber, One Direction and others. i could go on with this generation as they've accomplished many things. 4rd generation (2017/8 - now). These groups have a much better opportunity into going the western market, as kpop has expanded very far Some groups who have debuted during the 3rd generation are now just getting big and are identified as 4th generation Since the 4th generation only been around for 2 years, not many groups have really ‘broke through,’ however they’re starting to Groups like TXT, ITZY, ATEEZ, IZ*ONE, LOONA, Everglow, Stray Kids, The Boyz, Gidle, etc. now that we have briefly gone through the history, now on to the terms. these are simple and basic terms that the kpop world uses. Bias, your favorite member of a group. Bias wrecker, the member of a group that takes your attention away from your bias. Ultimate group/bias/bias wrecker, your absolute favorite, that one that takes the most attention from you & follow the most. Comeback, when a group/solo release an ep/album/ or single, tend to have promotions. Promotions, group or solo goes on different daily music shows to promote their title song and maybe a b-side. Title track, the ‘main single’, the one that represents the group the most tends to become the title track, has mv and gets promoted the most. B-side. the other songs in album, tend to be different genres to show diversity in music.
