Module 1 COSHH. Slide 1. Welcome to the COSHH module. In this module you will get an insight of what COSHH means, why a COSHH assessment is carried out, and how to understand the information on the COSHH form. Slide 2. In this module we will cover the following: What is COSHH? Working with substances hazardous to health, and the COSHH assessment. Slide 3. COSHH means, - Control of substances hazardous to health. Which basically means that we must carry out COSHH assessments and put measures in place, to make sure hazardous materials and substances do not cause any harm to yourself or anyone else. We will talk about the COSHH assessment later in this module. Slide 4. By Law, Employers must identify any health hazards by carrying out a risk assessment on all activities and tasks associated with a job role. From these risk assessments, a series of control measures, such as PPE can then be put into place to reduce any potential harm. By carrying out initial risk assessments, employers can then plan for any emergencies, provide vital training, and health surveillance. Slide 5. Substances hazardous to health can come in many forms, such as chemicals, fumes, dusts, vapours, and probably the one that most people forget about, when working with metalworking fluids is, bacteria and tramp oil. This can cause harm to operators if left neglected, and it is important to make sure condition monitoring is carried out on a regular basis. Slide 6. Whilst working at FUCHS Lubricants, one of the significant hazards to health, is working with oil and chemicals. Many roles at FUCHS will involve working with or encountering chemicals, so in order to comply with the COSHH regulations, we need to ensure that the following is in place when handling chemicals. • You have been given the correct training and guidance. • You understand the risk assessment carried out by your manager, and what control measures are in place to reduce any risk. • You have access to safety data sheets and COSHH forms for the chemicals that you handle, in case of an emergency, such as a spill, or for audit purposes. • FUCHS have the duty to inform you, if there has been any major change to chemical formulations to the products that you use on site. • You must wear the correct PPE stated on the risk assessment and COSHH forms. • Health Surveillance will be provided by FUCHS. If you are ever unsure about a substance, such as product in an unlabelled drum for instance, always ask. Slide 7. All chemicals that you work with will have a safety data sheet, (SDS), which can be as much as 12 pages long. It will provide you with all the information you require on the safety elements of the product. The COSHH assessment is a short summary of the safety data sheet, it will highlight hazards associated with the chemical, emergency procedures, and general safe handling procedures. This assessment gives guidance on what to do in case of an emergency. It is also a requirement by law that a COSHH assessment is completed for all chemicals used. Slide 8 – 10. The following slides show a typical COSHH assessment form, and all the relevant sections. All COSHH documents are reviewed annually. Reference for internal use. Product name. Product use. Supplier, and tier. Information on where the product will be used. Hazard phrases associated with the product. Hazard labels. Engineering Controls. Related documents. PPE requirements. Emergency procedures – First aid, and spillages. Guidance for safe handling of the product. Exposure limits. How to store the product safely. Suitable firefighting measures. Information on safe disposal. Date of assessment and assessor. Slide 11. Thank you. You have now completed this module.
