Evoenergy’s gas network in Canberra and Queanbeyan supplies gas to over 150,000 residential and business customers. Most customers are connected to the medium pressure Distribution Network. The Distribution Network has 4,000km of polyethylene and nylon pipe throughout Canberra and Queanbeyan supplying gas to customers at 200 kilopascals, or kPa, which is about the same pressure as the air in your car’s tyres. It’s no good to supply gas into this network just from one point as the pressure at the other end will be too low, so gas is introduced into this network at 95 District Regulators (DRs). Those 95 DRs are in turn connected together by a Secondary Network, comprising 250 km of steel pipes operating at 1,000 kPa, which is classified as ‘high pressure’. A small number of large customers are connected to the Secondary Network. Again, the Secondary Network is supplied at multiple points to ensure an even pressure across the Secondary Network. Gas is introduced into the Secondary Network at four locations from Primary Regulating Stations (PRSs) at Watson, Gungahlin, Phillip and Hume. These four PRSs are supplied by a Primary pipeline ‘backbone’ operating at 6,200 kPa. Finally, the Primary is supplied from two trunk pipelines: Dalton to the Trunk Receiving Station (TRS) at Watson (co-located with the PRS) Hoskinstown to the Fyshwick TRS
