This is the sound that was heard in 1997. Scientists were shocked when they first heard it. The sound is also known as: “The Bloop”. The sound was heard in The Pacific Ocean on the southern tip of South America. The sound was heard by super sensitive underwater microphones that could pick up any sounds from miles away. The microphones were made by The N O A A. Also known as The National Oceanic And Atmospheric Administration. The microphones were first used in the Cold War to detect other submarines. They are now used to detect strange sounds from the ocean. But “The Bloop” was stranger then normal. The N O A A said the sound was made out of very high frequencies. The sound was heard from 5000 kilometers away, or 3000 miles. This was a massive noise. The N O A A Chief Researcher at the time, Dr. Christopher Fox, thought the source of the sound was a unknown sea creature. Other scientists believed it was ice scraping against each other and creating this massive noise. Dr. Christopher Fox said the source of the sound will remain unknown because of how deep it came from. That is very hard to reach. After a lot of investigation The N O A A said it was ice calving. But we will never know for sure. It will always remain a mystery. What do you think? Was “The Bloop” just ice scraping against each other? Or was it something different? Something that we don’t know.
