Every one of these candles has three elements to it, a body and two shadows, and the shadows may also be called tails. The shadows are easy to understand, because they represent the same things as in the bar chart. And the top of the body can represent as the close price, or the open price as well. So how do you understand which one is which? There is a general consensus that hollow candles are bullish candles meaning; moving in an upward direction, and the bearish candles are solid or filling and, moving in a downward direction. Hollow implies they are transparent, or have the same color as the background.
