Dogs are pack animals, which means they require a social, hierarchical structure. The alpha dog is top in the hierarchy. If your dog considers him alpha, he will not obey commands and won’t take you seriously. This results in majority of behavioural issues. So, what can we do about it? Well, how about becoming the pack leader? Your dog must consider you higher in hierarchy. If you put in some clear leadership roles and become the “alpha”; then your dog will respond and present more positive behaviors. Leadership can be established by just few simple modifications. One must not bully or yell at dog at all, it’s of no use and only tortures the animal. Do Not Allow the Dog to Lead the Walk. If the dog pulls you, the message is very clear. HE IS THE BOSS Always Discourage Leash pulling. You need to show your dog that, you have the charge. Teach your dog to follow a piece of food, that you have in your hand. If your dog is not food motivated, use a toy instead. Show the food to your dog and then put it in your left hand. Hold your hand against the side of your body, so your dog learns to follow the food in your hand. Move forward and encourage her to follow the food, which now acts as a lure. Walk for about ten steps and then stop. Praise your dog and reward her with the food. That will teach her to stop and sit at the same time, making him more disciplined. Repeat this exercise several times with commands like ‘’heel’’ and “stop”. Gradually increasing the number of steps you take. This gonna show your dog that, walking next to you brings good things. Do Not Allow the Dog on the Furniture In wild alpha occupies the most comfortable space. Teach him to enjoy his own space. Eat before you let your dog eat. Once you have poured your food, do not allow him into it. Make him stay. Remember, Alpha always eat first. The process of feeding is an essential exercise in establishing the hierarchy between you and the dog. When you are preparing his meal, place him in a sit/stay in the same feeding location. He should not follow you around. He must remain still in the feeding corner, or the food does not arrive. Bring the bowl to him and make him sit. Put the bowl down, commanding him “stay”. He is not allowed to sniff or touch the food until you allow him to. He should be looking at you, NOT the food bowl prior to release. Stay at a higher height than your dog at all times. Do not roll around on the floor with your dog, as this puts you in a submissive position in his mind. If your have a particularly aggressive dog, do not allow him on furniture at all. This shows him that you are the alpha and, therefore, the leader of the pack. These little changes will definitely establish a great bond between you and your beloved dog.
