new report has just come out and it contains some worrying news. Researchers have discovered that most UK teens spend less time outdoors than prisoners! Another report has found that one in ten youngsters haven’t been to a park, a forest or a beach in the last year. Time spent outdoors is essential for our health, so why aren’t we spending more time outdoors? There are a number of reasons; firstly, parents worry about safety and stranger danger – so they restrict the time children spend alone outdoors. Secondly, many green spaces have disappeared as a result of urban development, so it’s not easy to find places to go. Lastly, technology has changed the way we socialise – we prefer to socialise online and indoors! In response to this worrying news the government has already announced plans to introduce outdoor learning and outdoor sports. So what is the solution, how can we encourage people to spend more time outdoors? There are lots of fun outdoor activities that you can do, you just have to get organised. Take geocaching for example – geocaching is an outdoor game using a mobile app to find hidden objects. Perhaps you haven’t heard of it yet, but over 4 million people around the world have already hidden and found caches. Parkour practitioners look at the outdoor environment in a different way and use their creativity and quick thinking to move around obstacles. It sounds so simple but so few of us do it – imagine the satisfaction of climbing a tree and enjoying the beauty of nature – or even just checking your social media in peace!
