Fractures of the radius and ulna are seen relatively frequently in veterinary medicine, and account for 17–18% of all fractures in small animals. Most of these fractures are seen in the middle and distal third of the diaphysis, likely due to lack of musculature in this area. Small/toy breed dogs and juvenile dogs are commonly affected, though these fractures can occur in any dog due to physical trauma. Overall prognosis is typically good, depending on the original fracture, patient signalment, surgical outcome, and long-term rehabilitation. There are many options for the treatment of long bone fractures, including conservative rest management, external coaptation with bandaging, external skeletal fixation, and internal plate fixation. This report will focus on a new method of internal plate fixation, minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO), which involves making small incisions remote to the fracture and creating an epiperiosteal tunnel between these incisions, allowing the plate to be inserted through the epiperiosteal tunnel and fixed to the bone with screws.
