The record of John in the book of Revelation in the Bible portrays many significant signs that will be given to us in the end times. One of the most remarkable signs that has been brought to our attention for many decades is the mark of the beast, because the scripture clearly writes that there will be a mark that will be given to men, and it says straightforwardly that whoever gets it will never see the kingdom of God. Because of the passage’s significant importance, there have been numerous different interpretations about what the number of the beast - 666 - would represent. The biblical scholars in the ancient world mostly took Roman Emperor Nero as the most likely candidate, suggesting that the number 666 symbolizes the numerical equivalence of the characters in his name when translated from Greek into Hebrew. As it is clearly past the indicated period for the sign to happen in the end times and involve Nero, we all can deduce that it is implausible to hold that Emperor Nero, who existed many centuries ago cannot be the one portrayed in the passage. However, it is true that there are still seemingly many groups of people claiming this interpretation as true. Moreover there were some groups of people claiming that the mark of the beast is something spiritual, so it is a spiritual mark of loyalty with God but is not a visible mark you would get on your body. However, with the viciously fast-growing circumstances that have taken place over the recent last few years, which has been vigorously debated in Christian communities, this issue again is drawing our attention to this unsolved topic. For the last few decades there have been several candidates of employed techniques of a machine-readable form, which seemed to be foreshadowing the coming of the mark of the beast. For example, when the barcode system was developed, there was much concern because the three longer pairs of strands that are embedded into every barcode represent the number 6 in its system, which makes the number 666 mandatorily printed on manufactured products that we use daily in our lives. And, with growing technology, an implantable identification chip, the size of a grain of rice, the so-called VeriChip, which is injected onto your hand, became the most likely form of the mark of the beast that we have imagined from then on. And with the extensive growth of its commercialization, especially in countries like Sweden, many number of people are already replacing the form of their identification and payment methods with chip implantation, which is claimed to be for utility purposes. So it has been strongly argued in Christian churches that this sort of system of technology represents the closest likeness of the picture that was depicted in the scripture, as it consists of the information of one’s identification, such as a social security number and payment methods like credit cards. Notwithstanding the recent signs of growing evidence, it still isn't clear whether the form of the mark of the beast has already been invented or is existing together with us in the world in which we live because of the fact that no device of any form has been inserted into our wrist or forehead that consists of data that would bring about social restrictions from selling and buying in the markets. And there is an additional question lurking under the surface. That is, how would it be applied fairly in the public eye with the challenges in the face of human rights, which would be inevitable to avoid. However after the global crisis broke out, we witnessed so many things that changed instantly, seeing many laws, regulations and policies applied to every public place worldwide. Travelling abroad and any sort of group gatherings are also restricted, tracking down one’s location and identification is mandatorily regulated and measuring body temperature has become one of our daily routines. But the most crucial point that is biblically worthwhile to consider is that the use of infrared sensors that are placed everywhere in public are meant to measure temperature, for which there are two different options, a person's forehead or wrist, which parallels the area of the human body where the mark of the beast will be given. By seeing this very particular mandatory procedure that we are witnessing in this contemporary era now, we can foresee that this might come as a social requirement that will be applied to our wrist or forehead, even to those who are not capable of getting it on their wrist. However at the moment, a clear picture has not emerged as to what the mark of the beast would be like or how we would be forced to get it under the pretext of social safety purposes. Therefore as Christians, it will be necessary not to be swayed by any falsehoods spread throughout all the mainstream media or lose one’s true biblical duties.
