Special education at presidency is a three-step process. • Identification. • Intervention. • Evaluation. Step 1: Identification. Early identification of a child who is at risk is the key. This is further divided into three step which is, • Referral, • observation, • and assessment. Referral. The teacher refers the student to the special educator, When there is a predominant deficit in basic skills such as reading, writing, comprehension and organizational skills. Any other developmental delay or behavioural challenges too can be brought to the notice of the special educator. Observation. The special educator observes the referred student under various environmental settings, in order to comprehend the challenges faced by the student with respect to scholastic and co-scholastic activities. Assessment. An informal assessment is conducted with the student; to establish the student’s present level of functioning. This step helps the special educator to understand the area of concern and the challenges faced by the student. Step 2 : Intervention. An important process where the special educator designs an Individualized Educational Programme (IEP) followed by a differentiated lesson plan which is executed in a one-on-one or small group -special education needs training (SENT) sessions. To ensure holistic development of the student an enrichment program by the subject teacher and home based program will benefit the student further. Step 3 :evaluation. A periodic quantitative and qualitative analysis is done to check the progress of the student. The student is supported by giving accommodation such as reading help, extra time and DQP based on their needs. Let’s recall.
