Hey guys, welcome to another video. Today I’m here to talk to you about the 50s’ Fashion! As you saw in the title, in this video I will focus on the Beat Generation style. But you may ask: what was the beat generation? The Beat Generation was a group of young people in the 1950s who refused to accept the values of the Western society. They valued some things like free self-expression and favoured modern jazz. First of all, I’m going to talk a little bit about the typical fifties fashion. As you can see, Fashion in the 1950s was exciting and diverse. There were new colors, fresh silhouettes, and different style options for different personalities. Key designs for the decade included dresses with cinched waists, pencil and poodle skirts, gingham and polka dot garments, cropped sweaters and cardigans, and much more. The key shape for the decade was a feminine, exaggerated hourglass silhouette. Additionally, as this decade saw the birth of the teenage culture, a distinction between youth fashion and more mature styles also developed. Moving now to the beat style, the members of this community based themselves on an anti-materialism attitude. Men wore cotton shirts with turtlenecks and scarfs and, sometimes, horizontal striped shirts. Most of the time, they also wore black sunglasses. For women, black was a favoured colour and it was usually worn in pants and turtlenecks. While the conventional style valued feminine forms and involved the most diverse colors, the beat style deferred attention away from themselves. So, guys, I really hope you enjoyed the video and learned a little more about fashion in the 50s and, of course, the beat generation.
