Resilience refers to the ability to manage everyday stressors and challenges. Resilience allows people to shift back along the mental health continuum towards good mental health. It is your ability to cope with tough times by applying your inner strength and engaging support networks and can enable you to face difficult situations and maintain good mental health. There are strategies and activities that can build resilience in yourself, anything that is not damaging to your physical and emotional health can be worth a try, such as: - Taking time to relax and focus - Break down a big challenge into smaller pieces and completing them one at a time - Celebrate both the big and the small achievements in your life (overcoming anything that seemed like a challenge before, that you have overcame can be counted as an achievement.) Some attributes of someone with high resilience: - optimistic - use positive self-talk for encouragement - have a positive sense of self - identify and express their feelings and thoughts - not hide away from strong emotions As young people, we need resilience to manage ups and downs, children and young people with greater levels of resilience are better able to manage stress. When children and young people learn to navigate these stressors, it supports their mental health and wellbeing now and into the future. and if a student has strong resilience, they can: - talk about their accomplishments and personal achievements in which they were proud of - express a sense of belonging and connection to their community - demonstrate a sense of personal autonomy when they talk about their lives - have definite plans and a positive view about their future If you need help, talking to your doctor is a good place to start.
