Good morning everyone. My name is Christian, and I will be your discussant for this morning. This report is all about word recognition. Objectives: Determine the meaning of word recognition. Improve the skills needed to become more efficient readers. Recognize the importance of word recognition to identify words easily. Word recognition Word recognition is the process of determining the meaning and pronunciation of a certain word. It is the foundation skill in reading upon which learning of advanced reading skills depends. According to Literacy Information and Communication System, word recognition refers to the ability of a reader to recognize written words correctly and virtually effortlessly. When you read, you aim to get the message of the word or the sentence. You are unable to notice the individual, or group of letters because you have become a fluent reader. However, when you crossed on unfamiliar words, you have noticed the letters and would stop reading. Importance of word recognition Word recognition is important for the reason that it aid individuals to read fluently and able to identify the words easily. Without the ability to recognize words, the reading process cannot proceed. The readers will recognize the words in a facile way and accurately. It is the building blocks which required the readers to decrypt the sound of words and to strengthen in reading comprehension. Phonics It is the understanding of letters and letter combination that represents phonemes that can be blended to create spoken words. A phoneme is the smallest unit of sound in speech. For example, p, b, d, and t in the English words pad, pat, bad, and bat. Phonics is a method of teaching people to read by correlating sounds with letters or groups of letters in an alphabetic writing system. Phonics is a way of teaching children how to read and write. It helps children hear, identify, and use different sounds. Understanding phonics will also help children know which letters to use when they are writing words. Phonetic Elements Consonant Blends These are putting together two individual consonant sounds to make one sound. A consonant is a basic speech sound in which the breath is at least partly obstructed, and which can be combined with a vowel to form a syllable. Examples of Consonant Blends: br for brown, cl for cloud, dr for drum, fr for fruit, tr for train Consonant Diagraph Two consonants coming together to give one sound. For example: sh for sheep, ch for chain, th for think, wh for wheel, ph for physics Diphthong A sound formed by the combination of two vowels in a single syllable, in which the sound begins as one vowel and moves toward another. For example: oy/oi for toy and coin, aw/au for straw and cause, ow/ou for cow and loud Vowel Diagraphs Two vowels that when placed together generate one sound. For example: book, meat, boat, feet
