15 year old Claudette Colvin refused to give her seat on the bus up to a white woman nine months before Rosa Parks had done the same. Her story was never told though, as she was darker than Rosa Parks and her hair wasn’t as straight as Parks' and shortly after the incident, Colvin became pregnant. Colvin was also one of five plaintiffs in Browder V. Gayle, which overturned segregation in Alabama buses. Yoko Ono is a Japanese artist and musician who, through her music and art, has advocated for equal rights for all. As a Japanese woman in the USA and the UK, she has experienced racism and sexism and used her art and music to express that. One of Ono’s most famous pieces, “Cut Piece” is a confrontation on gender, class, race, and cultural identity issues. Later on, she released the song “Everyman….Everywoman” in support of same-sex marriage. Ono continues to protest and donate in her late 80s. Marsha P. Johnson was a major part of the Gay Liberation Movement. Johnson was a prominent figure in the Stonewall uprising. As a black, trans woman herself, she felt it was necessary to help other people like her, so she established STAR with other black, trans women, where she helped homeless, Black, trans youth. Johnson, along with several other Black, trans women, helped hold the first pride event in NYC. Johnson’s ambition was to “see gay people liberated and free and to have the equal rights that of other Americans.” Her 1992 death was ruled a suicide.
