Giroux believes that the governing body uses forms of social media and other apparatus to collude and socialize everyone into a surveillance regime, personal information is willingly given. As of right now no one seems to have a problem, but if one were to arise no one could discuss it as it is no longer possible to discuss the surveillance the state so obviously abuses without simultaneously looking at the wider protection and commodification regime. This, of course, is advantageous to the governing body. A well setup catch22 we have so eagerly fallen for. If these manufactured ideas and fears didn't exist there would be no incentive for us to trust the powers that be and live with all security measures put in place in the name of "our own safety." No reason to isolate from each other. We could come together in resistance to the state and its imposition of forms of death on anyone who threatens their power. The security state with its manufactured fears does not induce or deserve trust, but ongoing collective resistance. From Giroux we see that fear is used as a self perpetuating cycle to create ongoing, privacy violations of the citizens and uphold power, now if this cycle were broken, some people may escape the fight or flight response and see through the state's mirage of protection and band together. We can see Giroux’s opinion coinciding with Petersons in the way that fear is fundamental to a totalitarian state. In the article, ‘Disputatio philosophica : International journal on philosophy and religion, (Vol. 14 No. 1, 2012)’ it is believed that terror is the essence of the totalitarian movement, in which enemies are necessary - as people can rally behind and have something to blame for all the wrongs in their life. Much like in 1984, the judgement of a person is not made in accordance with what they have done but their intentions of upholding the parties beliefs. The article states that under totalitarian rule, fear has lost its specific role. We know that fear, in principle, makes us more careful, it encourages us to remove ourselves from uncertain situations and avoid dangers but in these regimes, in which terror is a constant and cannot be resolved without revolt, it is not a guarantee for a safe retreat. When we serve under complete and total terror, fear can no longer be used as a guide for how to act, we become lost, directionless. Fed on lies and deception our perception of reality becomes warped and even fear cannot lead us out of this place. Fear has lost its practical usefulness to help avoid dangers and instead becomes a tool for the perpetrators to help destabilise humans and make them subservient. This is also true of 1984 one of the countless places we can see this is in the passage: “It was almost normal for people over thirty to be frightened of their own children.” Now fear is all around, fear has lost its practical usefulness. We do not know what is truly dangerous and what is not. People cannot use it as a guide to survive. Continuous maintenance of fear and uncertainty is the main task of this regime, without it, totalitarian regimes couldn’t exist. One of the ideas within the article is that within totalitarianism, feelings of consistent threat and loneliness occur in extremes. People are designed to be either the perpetrator or victim. But there is a certain uncertainty between who is in what role which does nothing but adds to the feeling of terror. You don't know who your informant is; they could be your family, coworkers, a friend or a stranger. This is important as it is another level of destabilization the regime needs to function and maintain terror. Any form of stability would begin to unravel the layers of uncertainty and fear the regime has so carefully constructed for itself. This constructed ideology is designed to almost brainwash humans into allowing their ideas to replace their own. Stripping individuality and freedom and replacing it with terror. It is certain that if you do anything that endangers the party you will be punished. The punishment that befalls the doomed only intensifies fear and uncertainty. Punishment from wrongdoing in 1984 is death and complete eradication of all signs you had ever existed. The extreme standard of punishment amplifies terror in this society. The planned total destruction and devaluation of human beings is one of the important elements of upholding constant fear. In our own society we have laws and punishment in place to deter inhumane actions but the party takes this idea to the extreme with inevitable death. This confirms the actions of its citizens to be suppressed and acting with the states belief as no one wants to die. We can clearly see that this type of regime violates the most basic principles and values of human life and individualism. In the ideology of totalitarianism, the individual is dead. There is no freedom. No individuality. The human is viewed as replaceable and expendable much like language itself and everything we take for granted in our day to day life. If fear which we rely so heavily upon was once again able to guide the citizens in 1984 it would force people to band together and rebel against the state as the state is the true unwavering cause of fear. Fear is the fundamental factor of a totalitarian regime. They begin to fall apart when fear of it is lost. Much like when you stand up to your childhood bully and are never touched again, the state's manufactured society will burst at the seams and with time crumble. Much like a lobster winning or losing this will have a cascading, catastrophic effect on future events. An action as simple as standing up for yourself stops forces of tyranny dead in its tracks. The willingness of the individual to stand up for themselves protects everyone from the corruption of society. Much like the four minute mile, when one person breaks this seemingly impenetrable barrier suddenly we can all accomplish this feat. The act of one person standing up leads many others to join him and the more people that follow the more fear will decrease. There is a certain safety in numbers. They can't exterminate everyone. Adopting the burden of self-conscious vulnerability so feared by the powers that be and allowing yourself to see the truths of the world around you begins to strip the fear away. With understanding comes lessened fear, this is a show of the upside of prices law and portico distribution. In a totalitarian regime the more you understand it the more you see its weaknesses which in turn reduces your fear and is an upward cycle out of this suppression. We all desire freedom, much like how the caged bird knows of its feral brethren's freedom and craves it we too know when we have been caged and locked down. This innate knowledge and recognition allow us to see the parties evil although born into the regime. As Peterson said, Standing up means bearing the harsh realities of life voluntarily and an act as simple as this manifests itself into your very core as a physical or metaphysical restructuring. Daring to be dangerous and allowing the serotonin to flow abundantly through the pathways craving it. This newfound courage and emotion would lead to the demise of the party. There would no longer be an incentive for us to trust and agree with all security measures put in place in the name of "our own safety." Such as the screens and thought police. With no reason to isolate from each other. We could come together in resistance to the state and its imposition of forms of death on anyone who threatens their power. The security state with its manufactured fears does not induce or deserve trust, but ongoing collective resistance. If fear which we rely so heavily upon is once again able to guide us it would force people to band together and rebel against the state. When fear is introduced we have two responses, fight or flight. As running away and leaving the fear behind is impossible in this circumstance the only response would be to fight the state. Much like many of those who have gained consciousness in 1894 do. They commit thought crime and their demise is inevitable but the wheels have been set in motion. Individuals begin to band together. Fear keeps the individual down if he has no way to escape this, no room to think. But if one person stands up it reduces all the fear and allows others to see a path forward, toward freedom facilitating the demise of the party.
