We often hear the term “always be positive”. “Do not be negative”. It is not good for your soul to be “negative”. As if it is not enough, people would go on and say, “negativity is hell; positivity is heaven”. It is as if positive and negative claims about our own humanity is an ideological discourse these days. You can not be one or the other. However, the truth is, the more you wedge positive or negative into a person, the more humanity breaks itself into myths, urban legends and less humanistic sense. The more we take away the very essence of humanity. But the truth is, our humanity – always have positive and negative sides. We set aside in the meantime whether that positive or negative thing is a construct, a representation or a scientific concept. For one, apart from other claims, our body is made up of atoms, chemicals, electrolytes – all having positive and negative charges if based on our elementary science. For example, our brain activity needs electrical and chemical charges to carry neural messages or have brain cells communicate with one another. Imbalance of electrolytes in our system also enervates our brain and bodily activities. At least at the cellular level, both the positives and negatives play an important role of stabilizing our body system. They both give integrity and structural regularity to our human functioning. Know that our brain, in terms of its network functioning, also fulfills positive and negative functions. From human standpoint, the way “being positive” has been circulating in social media and reads – “positive functions” are associated with your pleasure seeking actions, delightful emotions, fun filled creativity, and so on. If you feel good in receiving a plus point, or an award – and wanted to receive more of it – that is the positive function of you at work. If you want to help someone as you find joy in doing so – that is the positive function of you at work. If you want to experience a certain culture and embrace diversity through immersion that is the positive of you at work. This means then "being negative" refers to one's exercise of what is opposite the "positive functions", ergo, the “negative functions”. These negative functions are actions that constrain “pleasures”, “delight”, and “creativity”. However, when you go simply pushing yourselves to positive ends --- those functions that provide pleasures, delight and creativity --- without the so called “negatives” – or constraints --- may also push the boundaries beyond one’s humanity. Could you think of why you are telling your children not to overdo an action that is too enjoyable for them to indulge in? Know that, there are certain circuits and parts of our body that do the so called “negative” functions - in order to secure us, and to provide some integrity to our humanity. We get to fear the unknown to give us a sense of security for ourselves. We get to feel angry to acknowledge the worth of ourselves. We get sick to tell our body when to rest and why it needs to build sounder health. What will happen if you do not have any sense of fear or anger, at the very least? At least literature tell that yours could border a case of pathology. What will happen if you pretend not to be sick when you are supposed to rest? You fall into a relapse the other time. Overall, in this video, we are able to show that we are simply imagining the superiority of positive functions over negative functions. Part of the negative function connects you to your existence, survival, and worth. The positive side of you connects you as well to your existence, survival, and worth. Whether you bring both the negative and positive functions to less of what you want them to be or to their extremes – both of them could produce toxicity and pathology. In closing, if we drop the labels to our claims --- that is, which should be superior over the other, we can see very well what humanity is, what we need to acknowledge present in people and what is worth managing further to optimize the resources hiding beneath their positive and negative functions.
