Italy was back from a dictatorship, the fascist one, which lasted twenty years and a terrible war that had reduced the nation to exhaustion. After the referendum of 1946, which had sanctioned the end of the monarchy, it was necessary to lift the country from the rubble and build the nascent Republic on new and solid bases. The forces that dedicated themselves to the drafting of the Constitution were those that emerged victorious from the struggle of Resistance: the left parties and the Catholic parties.
