Anxiety Disorders • Anxiety is the unpleasant feeling of fear and apprehension. A felling of dread in the pit of the stomach, that something bad is going to happen. Anxiety does not always have an object, like fear for instance. Has been described as "A fear in search of a cause." o Anxiety is something that you cant diffuse (put your finger on). Its an unpleasant emotional state. o Physiological: Heightened level of arousal and physiological activation. For example; increased heart rate, shortness of breath, dry mouth. • o Cognitive: Subjective perception of anxious arousal and associated cognitive processes. Examples being; worry and ruminations. o Behavioural: "Safety" behaviours and avoidance. Anxiety is not Stress • Stress often does not have a clear cut definition. Many researchers have instead decided to conceptualize stress as a stimulus. • o Stress can be considered a stresser. Circumstances that are challenging and taxing on a person. • There are four different types of stress. o Frustration: Which refers to situations where we're being slowed down or prevented in our pursuit of a specific goal. o Conflict: Refers to when we are pushed in 2 different ways, and we struggle to resolve the tension between 2 different motivations. An example is internal tension between watching a TV show and studying. o Change: Which refers to life circumstances are being readjusted in certain ways. This readjustment can be good or bad. o Pressure: Which refers to the fact that there are external expectations that demand our compliance or obedience. An example would be finishing a paper in order to meet a certain deadline. Avoidance and procrastination come into play with pressure as well. • Anxiety can also be normal. Anxiety is part of life, everybody has things that they are anxious about. Anxiety can motivate us to act responsibly and can help us problem solve when things go wrong.
