Hello everyone, my name is Laura and today I am going to explain my internship experience in TUNNeL JV. I am going to talk about the company, the project they are doing and the tunnel boring machines. I will show some examples of the tasks I was doing, and finally, I will share my conclusion. On the first place, Tunnel is a joint venture between the German company HOCHTIEF and the French company VINCI. The company was specially created for the project of the new metro line that will connect Sydhavnen with the centre of Copenhagen. As already mentioned, the project they are developing is in Copenhagen and it consists of the construction of a twin-tube tunnel with an approximate length of 4,5km, 4 deep underground stations, 1 semi shallow station, and 2 cross-over shafts. So there are Sluseholmen station, Mozarts Plads station, Gasbaek shaft and Ny Ellebjerg station from one side. Form the other side there are Havneholmen station and the bifurcation chamber. And the most important part, the tunnel. The tunnel is being bored with a TBM, Tunnel boring machine that in this case had a diameter of around 5m. In this video you can see more or less how the TBM is working. Now I will show to you some of the tasks I was performing. On the first place, I was carrying out daily backfill grout tests on the onsite laboratory. This is to ensure the quality of the grout injected through the Tunnel boring machines. So here you can see the bleeding test, the gel time that is when the grout is mixed with the accelerator to become gel, the mud scale to know the density and the Marshal con test to know the viscosity. Another group of tasks I was doing was related to the repairs of the tunnel segmental lining. We were inspecting the tunnel looking for spalling, broken edges, leakages, gaps, steps... As it can be seen on those pictures. And related to this task, there were also full scale trials for concrete repair works, injections and secondary grouting. We were testing the material that would be used to repair the tunnel lining. As the last example, I was also working a lot with the analysis of the tunnel boring machine parameters, availability, efficiency, etc. And all of this could be done with TPC programme, which gives a lot of information about the machine and the tunnel. So finally, in conclusion, what I consider were my biggest gains from the internship were: discovering the tunnelling world and experiencing how a big project works. And my recommendations: do not discard any internship option just because you have never seen the topic before or you think you will not like it. The companies do not expect you to know everything but to be open to learn, to listen, and to improve every day. Thank you for your attention, I leave you some of the best pictures of my internship.
