Krishna's Beauty Dear Devotees, Krishna means ‘All attractive’. He mesmerizes everyone with his unique dark complexion. He looks even more Charming in his crossed legs with a Peacock feather on his head and a flute on his hip. These external features can be seen in the temple in the form of ArchaAvataram (as a deity), with which one gets connected soulfully. On continuous remembrance (Smaranam), one becomes advanced in the spiritual path. His auspicious qualities speak his internal beauty. Vishishtadvaita Philosopher Bhagavath Ramanujar, proved that Para brahmam (the Supreme Lord) is with Divine and auspicious Qualities (kalyANa guNAs). Without any qualities, Lord becomes meaningless or fiction as he cannot be seen or touched. In his Gadya Trayam, swami has explained the excellent innumerable attributes. Some of which are: JnAnam (true knowledge), Bhala (ability to support the whole Universe), Aishwarya (incomparable wealth and ruler of the Universe), veerya (untiring virility), shakthi (power to act without extraneous help), tEjas (unmatched radiance), Sowseelyam (Ignoring his supremacy and getting mingled with everyone), vAtsalya (pure unmitigated love), Maardava (affectionate tenderness towards devotees), KaruNya (Merciful), Gambheerya (majesty and nobility), Chathurya (ability to change even enemies into friends), dhairya (undaunted courage to bring succour to the bhaktas), kruthangnathai (remembering with gratitude even a little worship offered to Him), and he is the repository of all such innumerable kalyANa guNAs. Azhwars, Aacharyas (Guru) and bhaktas were immersed in both on his beauty & qualities, as it is flooded in the Lord. Realising his adorable qualities along with experiencing his beauty becomes divine, as it is the mixture of Bhakti and Jnana (Knowledge) about Supremacy. In this world, the external beauty of any living entity relies on his internal beauty. It is known that, if one is delighted internally, his external beauty enhances and if one is discontented, it deteriorates. This is the not the case with Krishna, as his qualities (the internal beauty) and his roopam (the external beauty) both are madhuram (Sweet) and never deteriorates. Pushti Marg philosopher, Vallabachariyar in his Madhurastakam says, everything about Krishna is Madhuram. Be it be his Adharam (lips), vadanam (face), Nayanam (eyes), hasitham (soulful smile), Srushtir (Creation), Karanam (actions), Haranam (stealing), Sakhyam (his friendship) everything is sweet like Amruth. Every living entity has tasted this amruth at once, but as the lives unfold, one forgets. Still, we are carrying a tiny drop of Gods beautiful quality, without our consent. Krishna’s beauty at his Childhood Yashoda and Nanda Maharaj were so delighted with Krishna’s beauty. They enjoyed utmost, at each stage of Krishna. At his Childhood, he attracted the people of Gokulam, with his dark- complexion, appealing bigger eyes, curly hair with a peacock feather, and always with handful of butter inside his mouth. One day Mother Yashoda, with mother’s love, commanded Ambhuli, the Moon to come and play with little Krishna. Where are you going without looking at my beautiful son? Come and enjoy the beauty of Krishna crawling on his hands, jerking gait with his tiny foots. Even Putana, the demon who came with an intention to kill Krishna, but on seeing his charming lotus-eyes, pleasing features, she attained motherly and started segregating milk. With Krishna’s grace she got liberation. Everyone in Gokulam, were relishing Krishna’s beauty, thereby getting immersed in Krishna Bhakti. To experience his beauty, one needs to let the eyes glued only on him and feel the eternal bliss. Krishna’s beauty at his Boyhood In any satsang, devotees involve talking, singing or remembering Krishna’s mischievous and prankish activities like Krishna stealing the Butter, sneaking the dresses of Gopi (Vastrapaharanam), playing with cowherd boys, eating the mud, applying Butter on the sleeping Guest’s mouth, and many more. Here the Bhaktas remember his Leelas, therby his auspicious qualities are experienced indirectly. His every fun filled play (hasya leelas) were Madhuram, shows his divine qualities. When he tendered the calves, taught them to drink water, played with Gopas and Gopis, danced with them, shared food with them showed his quality called Sowseelyam (Being a Supreme Controller easily mingled with Cowherd folks). When Krishna exchanged few grains for fruits with the poor old lady and showed his palms with conch shell and chakra and gave her moksha, who was in a grief to attain Krishna. This showed his karunyam (eagerness to help his devotees from grief, without anything). His external beauty is very well sufficient to experience his Maadhuryam (captivating beauty attractive). He showed his Gaambheeryam (not expecting anything, because of something) to his old friend Sudhama. Before Sudhama could ask anything, Krishna understood and showered him with wealth and happiness. Krishna’s beauty at his Youth Lord Brahma in his Brahmasamhita, expresses the beauty of Krishna. He praised and worshipped Lord Govinda, he who engages the cows and its calves with his mesmerizing music from his flute, his eyes are equivalent to the lotus petals, with a peacock feather on his head and his unique features attracted the cowherds. veṇuṁ, kvaṇantam, aravinda-dalāyatākṣam-, barhāvataṁsam, asitāmbuda-sundarāṅgam. kandarpa-koṭi-kamanīya-viśeṣa-śobhaṁ, govindam, ādi-puruṣaṁ, tam, ahaṁ, bhajāmi. Brahma realized beauty of Krishna through his devotion. The spiritual beauty of Krishna is not the same as visualizing the beauty in this World. It is far beyond one’s imagination. One can feel the bliss through bhakti with his mind and eyes fixed on Krishna. Andal, in her NAachiyar Thirumozhi bestowed Him and calls with the nickname, „Ella poigal uraipaane enge poga kandeerae... “. she says did you see the boy, who use to always lie? On the surface, it might mean to be a materialistic lie. But the conceptual meaning is: Whatever he lied, is not a lie. It is the truth. When the Gopis complained to Mother Yashoda, that Krishna stole the butter from my house. Krishna disagreed. To him the Butter, house, Gopis, lie, truth and everything is his property. So, he took the butter, which belonged to him. One need to be in such a high state, to understand Krishna is the Absolute truth. In this Prapanjam (Universe), everything is under his creation, including Brahma. Before the Srushti (creation), everything was inside his Kukshi (belly or cavity of the abdomen). Not only everything belongs to him, but he is inside everything (Vishwam). When he showed the entire universe in his mouth, mother Yashoda could not understand the absolute truth due to her motherliness love. In Bhagavat Gita Krishna says, aham, sarvasya, prabhavo, mattah, sarvam, pravartate, iti, matva, bhajante, mam, budha, bhava-samanvitah. I am the source, of all the spiritual and material worlds. Everything emanates from Me. The wiseman, who know this perfectly engage in the devotional service and worship me. Krishna always has a great plan to take his devotees back home. His plan is to make the devotees fall under his love and shower them with the celestial Bliss. Krishna’s beauty is merely a blissful experience and his qualities are divine Understanding. It is not at all easy to understand him, because what we think we know about him, is nothing. Krishna says in Gita that, out of many thousands, one may endeavor for perfection, and of those only one understands Krishna as truth. With his blessings and mercy (Karunyam- an auspicious internal quality) and by showing his beauty and qualities he takes his devotees back to him. Hare Krishna! Srimathe Ramanujaye Namaha!!
