The Virginia Company Of London established a colony in the Virginia wilderness in search of economic opportunities. As the years progressed, the Virginia Company demanded tobacco to increase their wealth because of the lack of minerals. More workers were sent to the colony as indentured servants and later orphaned children. Meanwhile, a war was occurring in Africa. Millions of West Africans were kidnapped and sold as slaves for life. This era was called the Middle Passage. Doctors would inspect the Africans before purchase to determine whether they would survive. Two different types of philosophies influenced the loading of ships. One was called “Loose Packing,” where captains took a smaller amount of West Africans in hopes that more of them would survive the journey. The other was called “Tight Packing,” where captains believed that taking more Africans will earn them more money, despite the deaths. They traveled in a triangular pattern and sold millions of Africans to states. The living conditions of the Africans in the ships were horrible. There was barely any space for them to move and even breathe. The captains fed them twice daily and made little holes in the deck for them. However, many of them still died on the journeys. The White Lion, a ship containing multiple West Africans, traveled to the Americas to sell them. The colonists willingly bought them and forced them to work on their tobacco fields alongside the indentured servants. Some were treated fairly by their masters, but many more weren’t.
